5 Books I’d Love to see On Screen

December 15, 2017 Discussion 16

When us bookworms hear that an adaptation is being made of our favourite novels, we are filled with both excitement and dread. The prospect of seeing our beloved characters come to life and bringing new fans to the books is something we dream of. But the risk that the adaptation will destroy everything we love about a book is big.

Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman

A fast paced, bloody revenge story and hunt for gold? Nice side of romance? Dusty, Wild West setting?? VENGEANCE ROAD would be a perfect movie.

Stormdancer by Jay Kristoff

While his recent books, NEVERNIGHT AND ILLUMINAE might be more popular, it is Kristoff’s underrated debut fantasy trilogy that I really want to see as a TV series. A Fuedal Japan inspired steampunk fantasy that’s brutal and filled with twists and turns. There are too many plot points and characters to squeeze decently into a movie. To do it justice it needs multiple seasons and a massive budget for Buruu’s animation.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

THE NIGHT CIRCUS is one of the most magical books I’ve ever read. It would be gorgeous to see on screen but I don’t know if anyone could do it justice. I would love them to do it justice (it’s such a beautiful story) but I don’t know if it’s possible.

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater

This is cheating a bit because THE SCORPIO RACES rights have already been sold (a few of the books have had the options sold actually). But anyway I’m still desperate for this to happen. I love me some horse movies. Plus the strong sense of family and attraction of the capall uisce is strong.

Vicious by V.E. Schwab

Recently I saw a trailer for that movie Flatliners that reminded me of the base concept of VICIOUS: experimentations with death leading to the development of superpowers. One thing I doubt that movie will have though is the exploration of the grey areas of good vs evil, or the amazing characters that exist in VICIOUS.

What books do you wish would be adapted for the screen?

It’d be a hard movie to do well and would need a decent budget to get the imagery right. But it would be the most magical movie.

I love this list. I think The Night Circus and The Scorpio Races would make amazing movies. I could have sworn that The Scorpio Races is in development at some point. Who knows if we will ever see them in movies but it’s fun to wish. Thanks for sharing!!! Have a great day!!!

Thanks! It was in development recently but I don’t know where they’re up to with it. It’s nice to have the option open though!

The Night Circus would make a wonderful TV show I think, but it would need a huge budget!

My favourite book in the whole world (big call, I know), Good Omens, is finally being adapted into a series. And Neil Gaiman is show runner, which makes me feel okay about it (and it had David Tennant in it so it was already winning imo!) I am a bit worried I’m going to hate it, but time will tell.

It would need a massive budget for all the CGI haha

I did hear Good Omens was becoming a movie! Didn’t know about David Tennant being in it though :D Hopefully it’s good.

Ooooh, yes, The Night Circus would make a gorgeous adaptation, especially as a TV show! I think it’d be almost impossible to pull off as a film, with all of the back and forth shifting through time. I recently thought the same thing of Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven – that would also be fantastic as a TV mini-series.

Still have to read The Scorpio Races at some point. And I just got Vicious as an early Christmas present, so guess what I’ll be reading very soon. ;)

I’m not sure if it’s enough for a full fledged series, but I think Night Circus could be good as a mini series too. I never considered that.

I hope you love Scorpio Races and Vicious :D

I vaguely remember hearing about it being optioned too actually. I forgot about that. I wonder if it got any further.
