5 of my Favourite #LoveOzYa Authors

May 18, 2017 Discussion 24

Australia has some fantastic writing talent, and so much of them don’t get as much love as they should in my opinion. So I thought I’d share pretty photos to convince you to read some underrated authors. Some you might have heard before but never read, or some might be new to you. It’s still worth a gander to expand your TBR.

Juliet Marillier

Juliet Marillier

Books: The Sevenwaters series, HEART’S BLOOD, Wildwood Dancing duology, Blackthorn & Grim, Shadowfell, The Bridei Chronicles, The Light Isles

Genres: Historical fantasy, young adult and adult

No. I’ve read: 14/ 20 books

Juliet Marillier is so very underrated, it makes me sad. Her writing is so gorgeous it deserves to be loved by many more people. My words honestly can’t do her novels justice. Plus her romances are all slow burn and shipworthy. And let’s not forget most of her series begin as fairy tale retellings (HEART’S BLOOD is Beauty and the Beast, WILDWOOD DANCING is the Twelve Dancing Princesses, and DAUGHTER OF THE FOREST a retelling of Six Swans).

If you like Beauty and the Beast and UPROOTED, I highly recommend Hearts BloodBook DepositoryBooktopia | BookWorld

Starbound Trilogy

Amie Kaufman

Books: The Starbound Trilogy, The Illuminae Files

Genres: Sci fi

No. I’ve read: 5/5

All of Amie Kaufman’s novels I’ve read have been co-authored so I can’t accurately identify what I liked, but I do know I enjoyed all of them! Both series are sci fi with great romances and characters, and multiple layers to the plot.

Rhiannon's Ride

Kate Forsyth

Books: Witches of Eileanan, Rhiannon’s Ride, The Starthorn Tree, BITTER GREENS, Chain of Charms, The Puzzle Rings, The Impossible Quest, THE WILD GIRL, THE BEAST’S GARDEN

Genres: Fantasy, historical, children’s, middle grade, young adult, and adult

No. I’ve read: 19/36 (approximately)

Kate Forsyth is the author who made me fall in love with the fantasy genre, and so I think she’ll always be one of my favourites. She creates such extensive beautiful worlds.

Jay Kristoff

Books: The Lotus War trilogy, Nevernight, the Illuminae Files

Genres: Fantasy and sci fi

No. I’ve read: 6/6

HOLY HELL THE PLOT TWISTS THIS MAN WRITES!! They’re insane. And he doesn’t have one per book, he has at least three major scenes that turn everything on its head. I don’t think I’ve managed to fully predict the plot of one of his novels yet. Pair this with his brilliant action scenes and beautiful and his books can be incredibly suspenseful.

Melina Marchetta

Melina Marchetta

Books: The Lumatere Chronicles, ON THE JELLICOE ROAD, LOOKING FOR ALIBRANDI, SAVING FRANCESCA, THE PIPER’S SON, TELL THE TRUTH SHAME THE DEVIL

Genres: Fantasy, contemporary, mystery/ thriller, young adult, adult.

No. I’ve read: 5/9

When I read LOOKING FOR ALIBRANDI in high school, I enjoyed it a lot, but it wasn’t until I read The Lumatere Chronicles that I truly fell in love with her writing. Her characters are so well developed and go through such growth in every single one of her novels I’ve read. I can’t wait to get my hands on more of her stuff.

That you do! They all have the best slow burn romances, it’s beautiful. I say Heart’s Blood because it’s my absolute favourite of her books, but honestly they’re all great novels.

    • Bec

Yasss read them! I really enjoyed Bitter Greens, haven’t gotten my hands on Wild Girl yet though. I hope you enjoy them :)

  1. Cait @ Paper Fury

Yessss so much love for Finnikin. And I also had no idea that Juliet Mariner was Aussie?!? I SO need to read her books omg (why do I never seem to keep up on all the good Aussie authors hahha) and I also am really keen to go through the entire Lotus trilogy. The Griffin was the best, but I’ve only read the first book. Shaaame, Cait, shame.

GET ON MARILLIER, CAIT!! Her books are historical fantasy so slow, but the writing and characters are gorgeous!.

Cait, you love stabby stabby books with twists and turns and sarcasm. HOW HAVE YOU NOT FINISHED THE LAST TWO LOTUS WAR BOOKS??? THEY’RE FULL OF THOSE GLORIOUS THINGS

  2. Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews

I’ve only read Kaufman and Kristoff through Illuminae (and soon GEMINA) but I want to read ALL of their other works – especially Kristoff! Marillier is an author I NEED to read like, yesterday. It’s shamefull. I know I’ll love her work too, I just need to get my hands on one of her books already. Same goes for Marchetta to be honest! Great selection of authors here Bec xx

I love the Illuminae books – I can’t wait for the third one! I need to read Kristoff’s latest, Nevernight. It sounds really good! I also need to read Melina Marchetta. Yeah, I’m like years behind on her but I’ll get there!

One of my favorite BOOKS is by an Australian author and that’s John Belushi is Dead.

Nevernight is SO GOOD!!! I love his fantasy stuff and cannot wait for more.

I’m slow on the Melina Marchetta wagon too haha. I read one of her novels for high school English class, but I’ve only just started getting into things more.

I haven’t heard of that book before!

  4. Tasya

I’m really excited to read Melina Marchetta’s books, I’ve heard amazing things about Lumatere Chronicles! I also have Lotus War and This Broken Stars, and I’m adding Hearts Blood on my TBR. Thanks for sharing!

    • Bec

They’re all so good!! I hope you get to read them all soon.

YAY I’m so happy I convinced you to add Heart’s Blood to your TBR. I love it so much and I hope you enjoy it too :)

  5. Sophie

Hi Bec could you please have a look at the Blood Bound series by J.L.Myers? She is an aussie too and I loved her books! I think she deserves more love:-)

    • Bec

I think I might have seen those around but I didn’t realise she was an Aussie! I’ll definitely look into them.

  6. Adriana @ BooksOnHerMind

I recognize many of these books and I’m so surprised there by Aussie authors. I know there are a lot of books out there with Aussie writers that I really want to get my hands on. Now I know more. The Dreamer’s Pool though, wasn’t the best.

I only really know of Cath Crowley since one of her books is one of my favorites of all time (:

We have some fantastic talent! Cath Crowley is an author I’ve been meaning to try for a while.

      It’s a shame you didn’t enjoy Dreamer’s Pool :(

  7. Greg

I’ve heard so many good things about Juliet Marillier, although I hadn’t realized she had 20 books. And I’ve enjoyed Illuminae/ Gemina a lot so I should try more Amie Kaufman too!
