5 Male MCs I Enjoyed Reading About

June 14, 2017 Discussion, Recommendations 27

Being female, I’ve had an uncanny experience of reading mostly books with female characters. Who ever thought I’d relate to females more than males, being a girl. It’s so crazy!

(please detect heavy sarcasm)

As much as I prefer female leads overall, as part of the whole relating to their issues a lot more, I still enjoy the occasional male MC, especially if it’s an entertaining guy. In fact most of the guys in this list are super witty, funny, and occasionally charming.

Percy

Percy Jackson from Percy Jackson and the Olympians

I jumped on the Percy train late (after I saw the movie) but he’s one that’s stuck around. Mostly because of the ridiculous sense of humour he has. I love it! Plus Percabeth.

13reasons

Clay Jensen from 13 Reasons Why

Clay was a surprise for me. I always expected him to be nice, but I didn’t expect to enjoy his voice so much. I think he’s the only high school male who has narrated a book I’ve read.

Rhys: things I love tags

Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses

PRECIOUS RHYS IS PRECIOUS. I LOVE HIM. THIS ALL CAPS FANGIRLING IS ENOUGH JUSTIFICATION FOR HIS PLACE ON THIS LIST. CANNOT WAIT TO READ ACOWAR WITH MORE RHYS. GIVE ME RHYS.

Harry Potter

Harry Potter

This is an obligatory add to the list, right?! Harry isn’t as outrageously hilarious as Percy (he has his moments, don’t get me wrong), but the reason I really enjoyed his story is the fact we got to watch him grow. Eight books we had with harry, growing up and battling this big evil. Kid did a decent job. I don’t know how he managed to pass all his exams.

White Cat

Cas from Curse Workers

Cas’s personality reminds me a lot of Percy actually. Witty, hilarious one lines. He also has such a cool, coveted power that is super unique. The only thing I didn’t really like about him was his obsession with Lila.

Thank you! I think I would have loved Harry even more if I’d read them when I was the same age as him, instead of 10 years older.

He was quite terrifying wasn’t he. But his powers were cool and I’d like his strategy brain to con my way through the world.

It’s nice to read a male voice every now and then for something different.

I’ve never really thought about how different a reading experience may be if you’re reading the opposite gender you identify with. I loved reading Harry in Harry Potter, but then I wasn’t a fan of reading The Lost Code by Kevin Emerson – however I definitely think that has to do with the fact I was bored when I was reading the story, not because the MC was a male.

I love reading books with 2 POV’s so we get the best of both worlds!

It can definitely change how relatable you think a character is. Boredom never helps a story.

Yes the dual POVs can be great, especially if both are well written, different voices. If they’re too similar it can be frustrating.

Harry Potter is obviously a favorite. I loved Jace from The Mortal Instruments too and non YA Archer from Archer’s Voice as well as Yoss from One Day Soon by Meredith A Walters

It’s funny in that weird way seeing books that were so popular at one stage fading into the background. It makes me wonder which books will truly stand the test of time.

The book was good in its own way, like the TV show was good in its own way. There’s a lot of similarities, but just as many differences.

Percy Jackson is so much fun to read!

    • Bec

He was super sassy and sarcastic!! I loved his one liners.

Oh yes Charlie! I’m not much of a contemporary reader so I’m not surprised I forgot him hahaha

Percy Jackson always makes me laugh. I’m not finished with the series, only two books in but his narration is funny! And Rhysand is my one true love; I only wish we got more of his narrative. I would definitely take a whole book dedicated entirely to Rhysand please. Another male MC that I adore is Jasper Dent from the I Hunt Killers series by Barry Lyga. He’s funny and so smart; I love getting inside is head and seeing what crazy thing he is about to do next. Great post!

He is a funny bugger! And gets more hilarious as time goes on.

I haven’t read that series! Funny and smart characters are my jam though so I’ll have to check it out.

    • Bec

RHYS IS PRECIOUS!!! The series is still going for me because I still haven’t read ACOTAR haha

      Harry is iconic

I haven’t even started ACOWAR yet!! I need enough time to fully process my emotions and that won’t be until after I graduate most likely.

I’m thrilled you added Harry Potter of course ♥ You’re right too: watching him grow through 7 books makes it easy to care for him – even if you’re not obsessed like I am :D And his sass is legendary! Percy is HILARIOUS and I really enjoyed him throughout the Riordan books he featured in! And Rhys is perfection incarnate. *sigh*
