5 Superior Standalones

June 23, 2017 Discussion, Recommendations 24

Eighty percent of the books on my shelves may be part of a series, but I still love a good standalone every now and then. Standalones are great stories that wrap up nicely, they never (well, usually never) leave you hanging. You might be desperate for more of those characters, but the plot is all tied up.

Here are 5 of my favourite standalones that were so well done I wish there was more!

Hearts Blood Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier

I will aways and forever recommend Heart’s Blood! My all time favourite Beauty and the Beast retelling that deserves so much more love. Every single person I’ve recommended it to has loved it. Seriously, if you love historical fantasy, good writing, or just plain old beautiful stories READ HEART’S BLOOD.

Night Circus

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus is one of the most magical books I’ve ever read. My dad read it on my recommendation and enjoyed it as much as I did. The writing is the best thing about this entire story, and I wish the circus was real. What I’d give to visit such an enchanting event.

Friday Society

The Friday Society by Adrienne Kress

I read this book years ago and had so much fun with it. It’s a shame it’s so underrated!! Steampunk with three girls with different strengths and smarts (one of which is Japanese), all working together against the wishes of society to overcome a villain. What I would give for a series of adventures with this gang.

Waer

Waer by Meg Caddy

Remember when werewolves were a trend with paranormal YA? So many meh books kind of turned me off them. Last year Waer reminded me about how interesting they could be! A standalone fantasy debut, this book has me excited to see what Meg Caddy churns out in the future.

Book THief

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

This book is guaranteed to destroy your feelings. Like any good book about a world war, the characters you get attached to will be ripped from you and make you cry. It’s fantastic. Highly recommended!

I love standalones. I have such a hard time keeping up with series, so I read standalones more often than not. I’ve only read The Book Thief on your list but it’s SO good. Definitely a favorite of mine. I’d recommend Ballads of Suburbia by Stephanie Kuehnert; another book that’s underrated but I love it oh so much, and the author is just fabulous. :)

I haven’t heard of that before! It’s definitely underrated. I’ll have to look into it.

I have Outcast on my TBR! I’ve been terrible at neglecting it for much too long. I’ll hopefully have my emotions destroyed by it soon.

Seriously, ALL of these are high priority TBR books for me! I’m not even going to comment on each one individually because I literally MUST read them all! I actually own most of them too so 1. I have no excuse and 2. Seeing them here motivated me even more. Standalones are great!
