5 TBR Books I Hope to Finally Read in 2018

January 21, 2018 Discussion 33

Hello my name is Bec and I have 209 books on my TBR pile. My actual, IRL TBR pile

Most of these books have been sitting there for over 12 months because I am a terrible person who had such little time last year. (And the time I did have was spent playing video games because I just did). It’s all starting to make me feel rather guilty. How could I neglect so many books, some of which are really hyped!

With any luck, I should get around to knocking a decent amount of these books off the TBR this year. Either through unhauling (unlikely because I have a book hoarding problem) or actually reading. I have more time at the moment, still not having a job, so here’s hoping I can knock some off the pile!

There are so many that I want to get to, it’s hard to figure out any sort of order to read them in. But there are some that I’m drawn to more than others (due to either mood or guilt of having them sit there so long ha)

The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

I won this book in a giveaway and was super excited because I’d heard so many amazing things about this series! It’s a fantasy that I’m pretty sure I’m going to love but the hype does scare me a little.

The Falconer Trilogy books #2 & #3 by Elizabeth May

This wasn’t on my TBR for that long as I only recently obtained this trilogy (thanks to Alise!) but I’m desperate to read it. THE FALCONER ended on such a cliffhanger, and I’ve been waiting years to finally get the chance to read the sequels. It’s right on the top of my TBR.

The Sword of Summer (Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard #1) by Rick Riordan

This is one of the books I feel most guilty about. I received this for review when it first came out, but didn’t pick it up because I hadn’t read Blood of Olympus yet. I still haven’t read Blood of Olympus, and so haven’t picked up Magnus Chase. I really need to get my act together.

Shadow Scale (Seraphina #2) by Rachel Hartman

SERAPHINA was a surprise 5 star read for me years ago and I remember being ecstatic when a sequel was released. I remember loving the characters and the take on dragons. I bought it immediately… and left it to sit on my shelf.

End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days #3) by Susan Ee

This is the last book in a trilogy I’ve really enjoyed. WHY HAVEN’T I PICKED IT UP YET??? At first it was because I was scared, and then it had been so long since I’d read the first two books that I forgot many things.

These are only the tip of the ice berg. I have so many books that have been on my TBR for years, a lot of them sequels to books I read a long time ago. I have a problem.

What TBR books are you hoping to get to in 2018?

I love Seraphina but I haven’t got around to read Shadow Scales too and now I’ve forgotten everything ‘-‘ I really should reread it before reading Shadow Scales, but I do want to read it this month. Angelfall reminds me that I need to finish The Darkest Minds series this year, before I forgot and need to reread the first book when I’m already have no time for that :’) Good luck with these books, and I love that Dany’s gif… always makes me laugh!

Yeaahhhh it’s been so long since I’ve read Seraphina, I’m excited to reread it and relive it all again. I hope you can find the time to reread!

Darkest Minds is another series I need to finish! I’ve only read the first book.

I am such a Rae Carson fan, and absolutely loved the Fire and Thorns series. I have had a copy of Seraphina for eternity, so I can share some guilt with you there. I hope you get to them all.

I really enjoyed Walk on Earth a Stranger so I’m excited to jump into her fantasy series.

Good luck catching up to your own books!

I really adored The Girl of Fire and Thorns series. The first was good but the second and third really picked up and delivered.

I’m really surprised she hasn’t written anything since :/ I’ve loved the first two books of the trilogy so much.

      They’re gorgeous books!

I read Seraphina so long ago, it’s hard to remember. According to the review I posted when I first read it, it was definitely the characters and writing that made it. I first heard about it through blogging back when it was first released. It was gorgeous and had DRAGONS.

Interesting… I’ll keep that in mind when I go into The Girl of Fire and Thorns. It’s nice to have this insight to readjust my expectations because a lot of people rave about the series.

Sequels can be scary! Especially when it’s been YEARS since you read the first book

Funny you mention The Girl of Fire and Thorns here. I read the first book last year and loved it, so now I’m hoping to finish the series this year. :)

Falconer Book #2 (gosh, why I can’t I remember the title?) is my favorite of that series – it blew the first book out of the water, IMO. The final book was also good, but I thought the ending was too neat and perfect. And Shadow SCAAAAAALE. Man, that was a while ago when I read it… But I do remember loving it!

Not really sure which long-overdue TBR books I’ll get to this year, to be honest. I have a sort of “reading plan” where I’m prioritizing books that are close in topic and genre to my current manuscript (the one we talked about a few months ago) as well as books from 2017 that I didn’t get around to reading. I’m also hoping to binge-finish three series this year: Fire & Thorns, Chronicle of the Unhewn Throne by Brian Staveley, and Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy.

How can a sequel be better than what the Falconer gave us???? Maaatteeee I need to read this ASAP if such a thing is actually possible.

Good luck you your reading schedule! I’ve been meaning to check out some of Hobb’s novels (one day I’ll get there)

Oh my gosh I don’t even want to think about counting my IRL TBR pile, I think I’d literally pass out. I really do need to work on cutting it down but is that really even possible? So I hear ya big time. Also I’m so glad I’m not the only one because ‘The Girl of Fire and Thorns’ and the ‘Angelfall’ trilogy have literally been part of my TBR for over four years, which is a tad ridiculous. Good luck to the both of us, I believe in us!!

The only reason I know is that at some point in the last few years I started using goodread to keep track… back when the TBR was just over 100 books haha.

I hope we can both cut our TBRs down soon!

I’ve started the Penryn and the End of Days series but have only read the first book. Really need to get to the others.
You really need to start the Magnus Chase trilogy. I love it!

    • Bec

I know I loved the first two books! I can’t wait to finish it.

I knoooowwww I feel like a terrible bookworm for not meeting Magnus Chase sooner.
