Assassin Mia Corvere has found her place among the Blades of Our Lady of Blessed Murder, but many in the Red Church ministry think she’s far from earned it. Plying her bloody trade in a backwater of the Republic, she’s no closer to ending Consul Scaeva and Cardinal Duomo, or avenging her familia. And after a deadly confrontation with an old enemy, Mia begins to suspect the motives of the Red Church itself.
When it’s announced that Scaeva and Duomo will be making a rare public appearance at the conclusion of the grand games in Godsgrave, Mia defies the Church and sells herself to a gladiatorial collegium for a chance to finally end them. Upon the sands of the arena, Mia finds new allies, bitter rivals, and more questions about her strange affinity for the shadows. But as conspiracies unfold within the collegium walls, and the body count rises, Mia will be forced to choose between loyalty and revenge, and uncover a secret that could change the very face of her world.
I am in so much shock right now
Hello ginormous book hangover. I’ve been waiting for you. It’s been over a week since I finished and I’m still…. how do you even describe this emotion? I knew it was coming, but hooooolllllyyy crap the ending.
No time wasted
When you go into a sequel, one of the worries is that a fair bit time is going to be used to refresh memories, allowing the plot to drag at first. Not so here! Firstly there’s the dramatic personae part in the beginning which reminds you who’s who and major plot events. We also get our narrators sassy comments and footnotes (the footnotes are so useful for memory jogging and world building!) It allowed us to jump straight into the action and barely slow down.
Gladiator arenas yassssss
Do you know what I love? ACTION PACKED GLADIATOR ARENA FIGHTS THAT ARE INSANE. Seriously, they’re intense, bloody, crazy, full of suspense, and did I mention insane? Some of the things these nobles put their gladiators up against are terrifying…ly awesome.
KRISTOFF YOU BRILLIANT BLOODY BRUTAL BASTARD
This review is pretty crap because all I’m doing is basically fangirling over the plot twists, and my book hangover, and all the awesome amazing things. Kristoff’s brain has some of the best twists and plot developments and characters. How does he even come up with such things that are so brilliant?
The finale is going to be GLORIOUS
Right time to calm down and give some sort of objective opinion on the events of GODSGRAVE if that’s even possible. So many major plot developments when it’s comes to Mia’s past, her family, and her plans for vengeance were in this book and in usual Kristoff fashion twists at the end turned it on its head. I can’t wait to see how not only that plot wraps up, but for us to finally get some answers about the darkin that have been floating on the edges from the first book. It’s going to be epic, surprising, and incredibly emotionally traumatising if it’s anything like his other fantasy series finale (speaking of, if you love this series but haven’t read Kristoff’s debut series, The Lotus War, yet, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOR LIFE????)
GODSGRAVE was an epic sequel and my first 5 star read of 2018. It was brutal to the feels, and contained so much love. I could spend all day gushing about this book. My body is so ready to be shocked and hurt all over again when the series finale comes out later this year.
