Buying Ban and TBR Smash Challenge Updates

June 8, 2015 Challenge 31

We’re half way through the year now which means time for a brief post on challenge updates!

I’m participating in two challenges this year: the Buying Ban Challenge and the TBR Smash challenge because my TBR pile is actually out of control.

The challenge I’m doing best in is hands down the buying ban challenge. I haven’t bought a book since January! Though I’m not doing so good at the not requesting part. Netgalley just puts too many interesting books up (saying that, I’m still not as bad as I used to be).

Getting review copies is one of the reasons I’m not doing so well on the TBR Smash challenge. While I am making some headway, recently I haven’t had time to read books that have been sitting on my TBR since before the start of the year. Uni gives me minimal time to read so I need to prioritise new review books at the moment, which don’t really count in my eyes. Still 20 of the 25 books I’ve read this year have been sitting on my TBR since 2014.

Of course this post wouldn’t be complete without an updated, bad quality picture of my physical  TBR pile. It started off looking very different in January and isn’t doing so shabby now. Still a lot of books though.

As for my eBook TBR pile, I still have 9 ARCs total. There’s 8 in my Netgalley folder and 1 in my Edelweiss folder (most of these don’t count toward the challenge though because they are recent additions. I have actually read quite a few eARCs)

And that’s it. I told you this post would be brief!

Are you participating in any challenges this year?
How are they going?

Bookfest? What bookfest? I had this post scheduled before I went. The relapse shall remain a secret.

Neat and tidy is the only way I can fit all the books on the one small shelf haha

Oh my god I wish I only had 9 ARC’s to read, I’ve got around 14 on NetGalley and 6 actually review copes, not that I mind, I LOVE getting the opportunity, it just sucks because I’ve had a bad time lately. *sigh* These are things we cannot help, but I wish you the best of luck. I haven’t bought many books this year, and that’s great, I’m impressed with you!<3

I’ve been trying so hard not to look at what’s on there and only requesting what I desperately want but it’s SO HARD TO RESIST. Thanks :)

Your TBR looks much better than mine though, I think I have about 90 physical books that I haven’t read and about 30 e-ARC’s lol congratulations to you though! I’m going to through mine today, I don’t buy that many books anymore but my recent birthday haul and review copies are too much ..

I think the total TBR books is about 138 or so right now. Slowly cutting through it all.

Birthdays always make the pile grow!

Your physical TBR shelf looks MUCH better than mine. I seriously need to participate in some challenges soon to get it under control. Three years of BEA have killed me, to the point where I’m happy I’m not going next year, otherwise I’d soon be buried in books o_O Way to go Bec, you get that thing under control! Then you can reward yourself with MORE BOOKS XD

Oh man if I went to BEA… Do not even want to imagine how that TBR would look. But really, who can blame you?!

More books is the best reward XD

Thanks! I was using that same process until uni hit and I had to prioritise the review books. Hopefully with holidays coming up I can get back into it.

I made myself stop requesting because it got to the point where I was requesting so much it became unmanageable. The temptation to request while on a buying ban is strong though, especially if it’s a book you were going to buy eventually but can’t just yet.

    • Bec

I wish I could do that! I get a new books of any variety and it just sits there collecting dust for months. Reading right away is a much better system.

I love how this post went up a little before Bookfest. You didn’t happen to plan it that way, did you? ;)

Wow, you’ve knocked quite a few books off that shelf and well done on not adding to it since January, that’s no easy task as most booknerds know. I need to seriously restrict myself as well. Mainly with buying new books. I’ve taken to buying most on Kindle lately and hardly requesting on Netgalley as well. I never request physical review copies anymore either, I can barely keep up with unsolicited copies as it is. Awesome job Bec, I wish I had your determination <3

Rearranging it makes it look like I’ve read more than I have ;) I’ve never requested a physical review copy because I’m so scared hahaha It does help the TBR problem a lot though. And I’m not on so many publisher’s mailing lists that I get inundated with unsolicited copies (yet)

Thanks :) My determination seriously comes from not having any spare money. If I had any the TBR would not look so little.

  6. Brittany

I really need to get in on these challenges, especially the TBR one. I keep checking more and more books out from the library and I was looking at my shelves the other day, astounded by the amount of books I haven’t read. I made a pledge to not check out any more books from the library until I read at least three from my shelf….

Of course, I still have 27 checked out from the library…

They’re pretty awesome motivation! The library is a great source of books when you can’t buy any, but there’s also so many books it easily results in TBR overload! Good luck cutting down that pile haha

    • Bec

That’s great to hear! Hopefully you keep it up and win all the challenges in six months time :D

    • Bec

Thanks! I’m in the same boat. I pretend it’s an intentional buying ban, but really it’s because I can’t afford books right now :(
