My Favourite Fictional Furries

February 12, 2017 Discussion 32

That title makes me cackle so much. Lucky for all of us, this post isn’t about the creepy furries. This post is about the cute and sometimes fluffy ones.

One of my favourite tropes in fantasy is the animal companion. That cute and fluffy side kick always makes a story 1000% better. Sometimes they die and break our hearts, and other times they create some hilarious entertainment or just general good companions. Plus animals are awesome, much better than people (this is why I’m becoming a vet. To save animals, not gross humans)

Reading NEVERNIGHT made me realise I actually have a lot of favourite fictional animals. Mister Kindly (if he can count as an animal) and Bastard were only two new additions to an extensive list. And since Alise and I are struggling for post ideas, I thought I’d share some of my favourite fictional animals.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. I’m probably forgetting some incredible animals. You can berate me about them in the comments.

Dove and Corr in The Scorpio Races

You bet there’s going to be a lot of horses in this list! What I love about Dove and Corr are the relationships they have with Puck and Sean, respectively. Both are gutsy horses willing to do anything for their riders, and I doubt they’d try half as hard if someone else was on their backs.

Kiki and the Sandseed horses from the Study Series

Okay so I thought I’d be nice and get the horses over with quickly for you. Kiki and the gang are hilarious and smart horses who I’m glad played such a big role in MAGIC STUDY  and sequels (they weren’t in POISON STUDY). They provide some great comic relief but are also have their own unique personalities.

Abraxos from Throne of Glass

First off Abraxas is awesome because WYVERN, but his appeal goes beyond being a mythical creature. This beast is a fighter, with some extreme determination and strength, going from underdog to a leader. Plus that bond he has with Manon is amazing. They’re going to achieve amazing things (again, I haven’t read EMPIRE OF STORMS yet so please please please not even the slightest hint of spoilers)

wyvern

Fleetfoot from Throne of Glass

Fleetfoot is such a cute little puppy and brilliant dog. She popped up at the perfect times in the first few books, and I really missed her in QUEEN OF SHADOWS. I’m hoping she has a bit of a bigger role in EMPIRE OF STORMS (which I haven’t read yet, and I don’t want to know a single thing about) and doesn’t die because that will break me.

Direwolves from A Song of Ice and Fire

It’s so cool that each of the Stark kids got their own wolf to grow with them. But unfortunately most are dead now, which isn’t cool. In any case the wolves were amazingly loyal and great protectors. And interesting wyrg vessels too… I really need to catch up in the books to read more about these fascinating creatures.

direwolf

Buruu from The Lotus War

DID SOMEONE SAY SASSY GRIFFIN?! Buruu is a thundertiger and a badass. One of the sassiest animals you’ll even meet, he had me in stitches. He was also the source of a lot of tears with his loyalty and bravery and bloody amazingness.

Tell me about your favourite fictional animals!

If you were a fictional character, what would your animal companion be?

Mine would most likely be an equine of some variety with some awesome powers, surprise surprise. Also a sassy sarcastic little shit because we’d have to banter.

Although tbh my cat would also make a pretty interesting animal companion. He’s loud and judgemental enough.

Oohhh wolves. I need to read some Robin Hobb books someday! I’ve heard so many things about all their books.

  1. Tasya

I wrote this kind of post a while back, and I have to say my favorites are Fawkes and Manchee! Fawkes because, well, he’s a phoenix, it’s so cool! And Manchee because he’s so sweet and loyal and just a perfect human best friend <3

Pretty much anything that has a sassy cat in it, I will read; this includes shifters that are cats (which is amusing to me, I used to avoid shifters until recently).

I recently read the All Souls Trilogy where a firedrake is a familiar, which was pretty cool (made me wish dragons were real).

I haven’t read any books about Shifters in so long! I remember when they were a massive trend. There are some fantastic books with them out there.

I haven’t heard of that trilogy but dragons are cool! I think I want to read them just for that haha.

I love this idea! I just made a blog list of my favorite fictional gal pals and I bet this list was just as hard to narrow down! I also have a crazy kitty, so I’ve got a soft spot for Hermoine’s Crookshanks. And if shifters are on the table, I gotta add Jest from Heartless. Swoon.

Just read a book (A Darkness Absolute) with a puppy that looks like a cub and I fell in love! I have this thing for animals and babies in books. I don’t know I just love them! Lol.

Thanks! They are certainly more of a fantasy things, particularly the ones that speak or make hilarious jokes. Animals are amazing

She’s so cute. I really wish we got to see more if her.

I haven’t read Eragon or His Dark Materials yet :/ Soon though, I need to soon.

All the animals in HP are amazing!

This is a very thought provoking post. I never really sat and thought about what my favorite animals have been over the years through out my reads. Excellent post.

  6. Micheline @ Lunar Rainbows Reviews

I ADORE Animal Companions ♥ Abraxos, Dove Corr and Fleetfoot are the only ones I know here but I love them all -especially Abraxos!!

I love Hedwig, Fawkes the Phoenix and all the magical companions from Harry Potter of course! I also love Chainsaw from The Raven Cycle. If I had an animal companion, it would obviously be a cat. A black cat. I don’t care if it’s a big cat or a regular cat but that’s what it would be. I do think I could have another companion though like an owl and a dragon – both would be black too though the dragon would be iridescent black :D LOVE this post^^

YES to Kiki! I absolutely adore her, and I love that she can talk to Yelena so she’s not just an adorable sidekick animal, but an anthropomorphic one :D

Bec. I have to say. I cannot believe you left Chainsaw off this list. Chainsaw is literally everything! I adore that little raven <3

Off the top of my head I cannot think of any other animal companions :O I know that when I read Viral Nation I adored the MC’s therapy bulldog, but I cannot remember its name *cries* TBH I think YA needs more animal characters because my cats are family and I never really see that T.T

Anthropomorphic animal companions are always the most hilarious.

I know I forgot Chainsaw but didn’t realise until I made the post. HOW COULD I FORGET CHAINSAW???? I tried to rectify it by including The Raven Boys in the featured image though haha.

YA always needs more animals!! There is quite a lack of cats, now that you mention it. What is this travesty?!
