May 15, 2015 Challenge, Discussion 42

We’re just over four complete months into my buying ban challenge and I still haven’t bought any books! Not a single one (minus Bookfest haha). This must be some kind of record.

Of course as the year goes on it gets harder and harder to resist all the new pretties that are finding their way into bookstores. I am entering all giveaways I possibly can in the hope I may get lucky and win one, but that has yet to occur. So I thought I’d brainwash and force you convince you that I deserve some books in the hopes one of you will buy me some books.

Not really. It’s just that May’s buying ban challenge post is all about convincing you that I deserve new books.

Why do I deserve new books? It’s simple really.

Also because most of the books I want are sequels to my favourite series or sequels to cliffhangers or new releases which have been raved about and I keep seeing them everywhere that ISN”T IN MY HANDS AND I JUST CAN’T

For the sake of my addiction the new/upcoming release books I need include:

Books I’ve already read and loved but don’t own a physical copy of yet:

What are some new releases you’re desperate to read/buy but haven’t had the opportunity to yet?

YOU ARE SUCH A STRONG SOUL BEC. Seriously, you’re like my inspiration.

END OF DAYSSSSS THOUGH. I totally forgot about that one for some ODDDDDD REASON WHYYYY, I need the skyscape one as well to match the others heh

Hmmmmm I’m with you, I want sequeeelllss! And I’ve kind of been umming and aahing over a few contemporaries (SHOCKER YES I KNOW) BUTTTT I feel like those aren’t worth the investment, especially since a) they’re standalones and rather fleeting b) I don’t get along with contemporaries to begin with so it’s like a huge risk c) intl publisher only so it’s only in HC but do I want to commit to HC of something that I have no idea if I’ll like??? QUESTIONS QUESTIONS. Or just questions about one book aka “The Wrong Side of Right”. You know what, unlike you, I am weak. And will probably cave. Especially if statistics destroys me tonight (and that is HIGHLY probable. If only stats was THAT easy LOL)

Skyscrape edition is needed to match all my other copies, so I’m desperately waiting for Mum to bribe me again so I can get it from TBD.

Contemporaries tend to be books I try to get from the library first usually (or get a review copy of on NG) Haha sometimes you just have to buy books, to cheer yourself up or whatever other reason.

    • Bec

So many I need! I do have a budget going, but I don’t know if I’ll be spending it when the ban ends because I don’t have money to spare right now :(

  2. Kirsty-Marie

Who, you’re staying strong (just pretend Bookfest never happened, nope, it never). YOU DESERVE BOOKS. YES, QUEEN OF SHADOWS. THE WAIT IS LONG.I need to get them all in hardcover too, so far. NEED. I’m still waiting for the paperback of The Kiss of Deception to by. I had to buy The Wrath and the Dawn yesterday because I couldn’t not, first book I’ve bought in over a month.

Bookfest happened before I had no money so I’m in the clear XD Though I am going to another one in a couple of weeks…

I want to read The Kiss of Deception! Couldn’t justify it on my list because there’s other books I’m desperate for and it’s the first in a series, but I want it! Same with The Wrath and the Dawn. I hope my library has them.

WAY TO GO BEC!!! Wooh! I know personally how challenging book bans can be and you are WITHOUT A DOUBT rocking this. I wish I was rich though, because I would SO buy you ALL the books^^ and preorder the ones yet to release! If I may, you definitely should break the ban for Queen of Shadows XD And with Raven King’s release being pushed back to next year, well you could buy that one then too without breaking your ban ;)

Oh and yeah, BookFest TOTALLY doesn’t count. Just close your eyes and pretend it was allll a dreeeaamm -.-

Aw thanks. I definitely wish you were rich too XD

Definitely breaking the ban for Queen of Shadows if I’m not lucky enough to get a review copy. I need that book.

    • Bec

Plenty of time to save! I think that’s going to be a book I can’t help but break my buying ban for.

  4. Killian

If I tried to implement a book buying ban on myself I’d probably fail (if I have money, I buy books) so fair play for keeping it up for three months. I am getting pretty overwhelmed with books I want though. Over the past while I’ve been trying to read lots of genres that I don’t know too much about, specifically literary fiction and comics. In regards to the latter, there are so many amazing comics and graphic novels out there that when I go to a bookshop I tend to have an absolutely massive pile that takes ages to trim down. The fact that it’s a really exciting medium is both a blessing and a curse.

The further we get into the year, the harder it gets!

Oh man graphic novels are cool. But so short and expensive.

  5. paperdollmom

Wow! That is quite a commitment! I am not sure I could do such a thing. I am actually quite amazed at your dedication. Keep up the good work!

    • Bec

I honestly have no idea how I’m sticky to it. Probably because I have no money to spare and no time to read, let alone think about buying books.

  6. ShootingStarsMag

I feel your pain. I keep adding more and more books to my Amazon wish list. I don’t know about newer titles though – I’m blanking right now, but I’m sure there are a TON. It’s a good thing I’m blanking though or I’d be trying to buy a ton right now too. haha

I’ve been trying to stay away from Goodreads lists and Amazon and things because knowing even more books I can’t have will make this whole situation extra unbearable! So many good books I want already, let’s not try to add more to the list.

  7. Laura Plus Books

Reading your list is making me think that I need all of these as well. I definitely need to continue the Lunar Chronicles! And get on with some more Julie Kagawa books. Damn, I need all the books as well. D:

You are incredible for keeping up with your book ban!

    • Bec

      Sorry not sorry XD

You definitely need to read more Lunar Chronicles! They’re so good.

    • Bec

A book buying rage is inevitable. I just hope it a few months off when I have more money.

  8. Sarah @ One Curvy Blogger

Oh my gosh, I give you props. I think I’ve bought like 5 or 6 full length books. This week. I just can’t help myself. I think I need an intervention. I have decided to instead of only jut hoarding boooks to disperse the buying betwee all my loves. Books, fashion, MAKE-UP. <3 I don't think it helps my spending, but it helps me to appear less crazy. Maybe. Erg.
Sarah @ One Curvy Blogger recently posted…Not Your Average Romance Writer by L.J. Wilson

    • Bec

Haha dispersing the money will dilute the sheer volume of books coming in. And give you more time to cut down on books before piling up so many so quickly.

    • Bec

So many choices! I feel like that could be worse. How do you decide?!

4 months is still a great time! And you have to buy books at Supanova. It’s ridiculous not too.

  9. Lola

While there are a few new releases I really wnat and haven’t bought or pre-ordered yet, mostly I am doign alright. I haven’t bought a lot of books this year with the exception of agift card money and I made an exception last week as April was a good month. And I get a lot of review copeis, that helps a lot.
There are two Kelley Armstrong books I haven’t pre-ordered yet (one is even released already and I haven’t read book 1 yet) which is really getting me upset as she’s one of my favourite authors and I need all her books. I have been entering giveaways as well, but no luck yet. Beside that I am doing pretty good and most of the new releases I am excited for beside that I am hoping I will be able to receive a review copy.

Gift cards are a-ok to spend and don’t count as breaking bans! The books were essentially gifts in the end. Getting review copies definitely helps.

I haven’t been able to read any of Kelley Armstrong’s latest books, and it sucks because she’s one of my favourite authors too.

  10. Karen

And here I thought that my self-imposed book buying ban of a month and a half was bad… You are my hero.
I do recognise a lot of books on that list though… SO MANY.

  11. Terri M., the Director

Winter is at the top of my list as well. Since that comes out later this year, you can bet that will be on the Christmas list along with Fairest which I checked out from the library, but do not own.

Amazon had a sale on the Falconer eBook recently so I used some of my saved gift card money to buy that one since my sister recommended it highly.

And I have been entering giveaways like crazy as well and finally won one!

I have to get Fairest as well! Checking the library is a good idea. That is something I must do when I get time.

The Falconer is so good! I’m saving up for a physical hardcover.

      Yay for winning!

    • Bec

It must have felt so good finally getting to buy a physical book again!

I’m determined to make this last.

    • Bec

Ignorance is bliss haha. The only reason I’m on a ban is that I have to actually use the little money I get for important living things. Cannot wait to have some spare to spend though (if it ever happens)

  12. Leigh @ Little Book Star

Yay keep it up, Bec! I have not been on the book-buying mood lately which is good lol. I actually am very motivated to finish up series and trilogies this summer before buying new books.

    • Bec

Those moods always help haha. A lot of the series I need to finish require buying the next book, but I understand the feeling! It’s great motivation.

  13. Olivia

I have to say, I really do admire you for this book ban! I wouldn’t be able to do it if I were you. I don’t know how but I have managed to find myself with 14 new books this month in paperback (thankfully no new ebooks though xD) It’s a mixture of buying and giveaways but I doubt I would be able to last through a week of a book buying ban.

The only reason I’m doing so well is because I literally don’t have a choice. Not if I want a roof over my head anyway.

Giveaways are the best things, especially if you win them XD
