My Bookish Gifts

August 8, 2015 Challenge 46

I like how from the sounds of that title I have a number of bookish items people have given me. In reality, it’s just one thing. I tend to ask for books more than bookish items, and according to the Buying Ban Challenge post list, books don’t count for this months topic. Probably for the best because I can barely remember which books were given to me and which weren’t.

So what’s this mystery gif?

*drum roll*

The cute owl bookends!

Mum bought these for me sometime last year. She found them in a random two dollar store. They were surpsisingly expensive ($20 each!) but they’re adorable so it’s totally worth it. The owls have been tasked with holding up my immediate TBR pile at my uni rental house.

Another item which probably qualifies as a bookish gift is my big, black bookshelf.

This was my birthday present a couple of years ago because I was about to start piling books on the floor.

Have you ever received a bookish gift that wasn’t a book?
Have you ever given someone else a bookish gift?

Those bookends are really cool! I’ve considered buying some but I’ve never really needed them. I’m also pretty jealous of your bookshelf. I refurbished my room a few months ago and I had to get rid of my original bookshelf (which was HUGE) and now I have a really tiny one. I already have books piling up on top of it and I think there are books in every draw in my bedroom. It’s chaos.

Yeah the only reason I have them is because my TBR is overflowing and I needed to start putting books on top of it.

      Book surprises everywhere!

Mum never bothers getting me bookmarks anymore because I get so many when I buy books hahahaha I have a box full of them and never use 90% of them XD Bookshelves just end up being the most useful in the long run

Love your owl bookends! They are so adorable. Must be fun to look at every day. :) I don’t I have that many bookish gifts, either. The only ones that come to mind are the book initials (initials cut from actual books) that my husband bought for me last year. We came across them in a little boutique shop in St. Augustine and I loved them. A few months later they were suddenly everywhere (Books-a-Million had a huge display) and, naturally were way cheaper. LOL

Book initials are cool! They’re super popular now. But my heart clenches every time I see them because those poor books!

Bookends. God, I need some of those. My books are always falling! Ehhh, do bookmarks count as bookish gifts? Because that’s what people give me – that is, besides books, but they don’t count.

Sounds like bookends would come in handy! Or you could start laying down/stacking a few books at the end of the row. Have books as bookends hhahaha

They do indeed! Only reason I didn’t include bookmarks is because I think I’ve gotten only one as a gift haha.

    • Bec

I’ve never had bookends until now because I’ve always had enough books to fill all my shelves. Now I have too many books for my shelves!

I need more bookish shirts/bags!!! I own some, but I’ve bought them all for myself.

I tend to get more books than bookish gifts as well, all my bookish gifts are basically bookmarks. I really do like the bookends though because they match all the colors of my room perfectly *grabby hands* My favorite bookish gift would have to be the Siege and Storm and chocolate package you sent me.

    • Bec

Bookmarks are popular gifts! For most people except me because I get so many free ones my family doesn’t even try haha.

I’ll send them to you when I no longer have use for them :P

Of course my present is the favourite. I send the best gifts.

    • Bec

They’re so cute! Haha the struggles of serious bookworms. Hope you get some cute bookends soon!

    • Bec

I love rereading old favourites when I’m in a slump/meh mood. It’s so much fun to revisit your favourite stories again and again.

My shelves were too full until I started getting review copies and my TBR shelf started overflowing!

    • Bec

Oh no! Next time it’s your birthday/christmas/any gift giving occasion give all your friends lists with only bookish items on it. Then you’ll get many at once!

    • Bec

The prettiness makes them worth it. I hope you can find some similar!

I want some bookish tote bags! Haven’t received any yet but they’re so useful.

Those owls are THE cutest thing ever! I love them ♥ And your big black bookcase is GLORIOUS I tell you :D I received a bookcase too as a gift from the boyfriend, along with some pricey stone bookends from my mom, some bookmarks and bookish fandom items :)

Isn’t it just! I’m sad it doesn’t fit in my room at my new house and so has to live in my sister’s room now :(

      Those are all glorious gifts!

Haha! ~ That’s how I got my second bookshelf too. I’m now storing my library books under my bed. I have no more space for bookshelves.
Those owls are adorable. What is it about them that book lovers just… love?

    • Bec

Owls are cool. And maybe we feel some sort of connection to them because we’re always up late reading haha

  7. Karen

Let’s just say that I would definitely not say no to those wonderful bookshelves. I think I might need to invest in some new ones soon. Happens when your wonderful boyfriend buys you books to say welcome home :)
Bookmarks are a nice gift. I’ve only gotten one set of them as a present ever though but I still have them and they are gorgeous quote ones :)

    • Bec

Books would be the best welcome back present!! Bookmarks are good presents and great items to collect (I swear I never use half the bookmarks I own)

    • Bec

I NEED THOSE MAGNET BOOKMARKS STAT!!! Will Herondale needs to read every book with me ;) And ToG merch is something I NEED in my life (SOON)

  8. Chiara @ Books for a Delicate Eternity

Those owls are super cute, and I am in desperate need of more shelves because I DO stack books on the floor (which is sad. The floor is no place for books!).

As for bookish gifts that WERE NOT BOOKS … I have received bookmarks over the years. I love bookmarks, they are awesome. Mother has also gifted me the two bookshelves that I DO have. But other than those two, I cannot really think of anything. I don’t use bookends, because there is no room for them whatsoever. And a lot of people simply buy me books, rather than bookish things!

I never had any use for bookends until I came to uni and had no space on the TBR shelf for all the books so had to start putting them on top of the bookshelf.

Overall I think I’d rather get books… Or bookish/fandom merch. Never enough merch!

  9. Romi

Hmm… bookish gifts that aren’t books. Well, books do tend to me my perogative, but I’ve been gifted bookplates before, and totes and things like that. Figures from books/stories! Those can be a lot of fun to collect (aka Funko Pops which are amazing). I love your owl bookends! So neat! xx

    • Bec

Bookplates are handy! I’ve never gotten any as gifs before. And I’ve been wanting to start collecting Funko Pops! They’re so cool :D
