Series: Heist Society #3
Genres: Action & Adventure, Contemporary
Katarina Bishop and W.W. Hale the fifth were born to lead completely different lives: Kat comes from a long, proud line of loveable criminal masterminds, while Hale is the scion of one of the most seemingly perfect dynasties in the world. If their families have one thing in common, it’s that they both know how to stay under the radar while getting—or stealing—whatever they want.
No matter the risk, the Bishops can always be counted on, but in Hale’s family, all bets are off when money is on the line. When Hale unexpectedly inherits his grandmother’s billion dollar corporation, he quickly learns that there’s no place for Kat and their old heists in his new role. But Kat won’t let him go that easily, especially after she gets tipped off that his grandmother’s will might have been altered in an elaborate con to steal the company’s fortune. So instead of being the heir—this time, Hale might be the mark.
Forced to keep a level head as she and her crew fight for one of their own, Kat comes up with an ambitious and far-reaching plan that only the Bishop family would dare attempt. To pull it off, Kat is prepared to do the impossible, but first, she has to decide if she’s willing to save her boyfriend’s company if it means losing the boy.
I think I should start off by saying I love Ally Carter. Her writing is fantastic. Always light and funny, but with a great plot line and emotional undercurrents. PERFECT SCOUNDRELS was no exception to her awesomeness. If anything, it was slightly more serious and character driven than the previous Heist Society books. But I’m more than okay with that. Especially since my babies are together. HALE AND KAT ARE DATING
I ship them so hard. And learning they’re now in a romantic relationship is the best news. PERFECT SCOUNDRELS is in no way a romance-centric novel. No way. The romance wasn’t even my favourite part. Like the other books in this series, PERFECT SCOUNDRELS is about a con. A very elaborate, very intriguing con of which Hale and his family’s company is at the centre.
Talking about the con is really hard to do without spoilers so I have to be vague. We got to return to places not seen since HEIST SOCIETY, and delve into Hale’s family history. All our favourites return (some quite briefly, others we get to see more of than ever before) and new faces arrive in order to save one of their best friends and pull off a job which seems impossible. Hardships are faced repeatedly and nothing is ever what you expect it to be.
I was so surprised by some of the turn of events. I thought I knew what was going on and then suddenly it was the complete opposite. Things would appear to be going greatly then suddenly turn south. And occasionally you thought it was all over, there was nothing left to do, and it was revealed that things were actually much better than you expected (this particularly applied at the end). PERFECT SCOUNDRELS was just really great and fun to read. Very fast too. The plot just kept developing and it was great.
Like I have said about a billion times already, I really enjoyed this. And I think people who are looking for a nice, light, funny read that won’t get their emotions too involved will enjoy it to. My only real complaint is we still don’t know what the W.W. stands for in W.W. Hale V (and we were so close at one point. So close)
One day, we will find out. One day…
