It was Sloane who yanked Emily out of her shell and made life 100% interesting. But right before what should have been the most epic summer, Sloane just…disappears. All she leaves behind is a to-do list.
On it, thirteen Sloane-inspired tasks that Emily would normally never try. But what if they could bring her best friend back?
Apple picking at night? Okay, easy enough.
Dance until dawn? Sure. Why not?
Kiss a stranger? Um...
Emily now has this unexpected summer, and the help of Frank Porter (totally unexpected), to check things off Sloane's list. Who knows what she’ll find?
Go skinny-dipping? Wait...what?
After really enjoying THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING
(dogs) by Morgan Matson, I wanted to check out her other books. SINCE YOU’VE BEEN GONE had somewhat of a fun, interesting premise as well: Emily’s best friend has disappeared, but she left a list behind full of things to complete.
As an introverted person I could definitely relate to Emily and her struggle with doing some of the tasks. I absolutely loved how she slowly progressed throughout the novel and became more of her own person and comfortable with herself, since she was usually somewhat in the shadow of her friend Sloane, and was fine with it.
I really liked how this book focused so much on the different relationships Emily has in her life. There is a romance, but it didn’t overshadow anything else – the relationship she has with her parents and newfound friends is also explored.
In terms of the romance, I thought it developed perfectly – it was very sweet and it was great how it started off as a friendship before developing into even the possibility of anything more. There were also some other elements surrounding this but I thought they were handled really well. View Spoiler »Frank is actually in a relationship with someone else but it is a relationship that neither are happy in and he makes sure to end that before starting anything with Emily. « Hide Spoiler
SINCE YOU’VE BEEN GONE was such a fun read that really brings you back to the feeling of summer and close friendships and is extremely easy to relate to. I definitely would recommend it for contemporary fans.
