Unhinged by A.G. Howard

Publisher: Amulet
Genre: Fantasy
Series: Splintered #2
Release Date: August 20th, 2013

Alyssa Gardner has been down the rabbit hole and faced the bandersnatch. She saved the life of Jeb, the guy she loves, and escaped the machinations of the disturbingly seductive Morpheus and the vindictive Queen Red. Now all she has to do is graduate high school and make it through prom so she can attend the prestigious art school in London she’s always dreamed of.

That would be easier without her mother, freshly released from an asylum, acting overly protective and suspicious. And it would be much simpler if the mysterious Morpheus didn’t show up for school one day to tempt her with another dangerous quest in the dark, challenging Wonderland—where she (partly) belongs.

As prom and graduation creep closer, Alyssa juggles Morpheus’s unsettling presence in her real world with trying to tell Jeb the truth about a past he’s forgotten. Glimpses of Wonderland start to bleed through her art and into her world in very disturbing ways, and Morpheus warns that Queen Red won’t be far behind.

If Alyssa stays in the human realm, she could endanger Jeb, her parents, and everyone she loves. But if she steps through the rabbit hole again, she’ll face a deadly battle that could cost more than just her head.

Sekret by Lindsay Smith

Publisher: MacMillan Children’s
Genre: Historical Fiction
Series: Sekret #1
Release Date: April 15th, 2014

From debut author Lindsay Smith comes an espionage thriller
with a dash of both history and dystopia.

Yulia’s father always taught her that an empty mind is a safe mind. She has to hide her thoughts and control her emotions to survive in Communist Russia, especially because she seems to be able to read the minds of the people she touches. When she’s captured by the KGB and forced to work as a psychic spy with a mission to undermine the U.S. space program, she’s thrust into a world of suspicion, deceit, and horrifying power where she can trust no one.

She certainly can’t trust Rostov, the cruel KGB operative running the psychic program. Or handsome Sergei who encourages her to cooperate with the KGB. Or brooding Valentin who tells her to rebel against them. And not the CIA, who have a psychic so powerful he can erase a person’s mind with his own thoughts. Yulia quickly learns she must rely on her own wits and power to survive in this world where no SEKRET can stay hidden for long.

The cover for Unhinged looks so cool. I could never get into the whole Alice & Wonderland thing though. Thanks for checking out my WoW.

I love Alice in Wonderland! And own about 2-3 retelling that I haven’t gotten too yet… Including SPLINTERED

    • Bec

Me either. SEKRET does look good! I’m on a Netgalley ban for myself right now, but I doubt I’d get approved anyway…

  2. Niki Hawkes

Unhinged has such an amazing cover – it makes me want to pick up the first book just so I can read this one when it comes out. :-)

  3. Tanja

I wasn’t such a huge fan of Splintered so I think I’ll skip the sequel. I guess retellings aren’t my thing. But Sekret sounds really great! :) I hope you’ll get the books soon.

I love retellings so I’m hoping I enjoy SPLINTERED. I can’t wait until SEKRET comes out, I’m so intrigued by it.

  4. Kezia

Yikes I should read Splintered soon! :/ why so many books yet so little time :( Unhinged cover looks creative and gorgeous but I prefer Splintered cover more. Sekret is on my list too! I don’t read historical much but the synopsis is really interesting I can’t wait for the pub date!

    • Bec

I know, right! I love historical but SEKRET is more modern than I usually read, I think. Either way I’ll probably enjoy it

    • Bec

The more comments I read the more I realise I am not to only person to not have read SPLINTERED.

Yay! I got to introduce you to something :)

    • Bec

I have no idea who Morpheus is yet but I shall hopefully find out soon. SEKRET does sound pretty awesome

    • Bec

Yay! Good to hear. Hope you enjoy it when you get your hands on it. And I’m happy I could introduce you to something new.

  5. Becca @ Nawanda Files

I’m still debating on whether or not I want to read Unhinged. I did enjoy Splintered, but not as much as I had hoped. It was a little slow for me, and the male love interest was a little unneeded. Took away from Alyssa’s personality and storyline instead of helped it. BUT I may eventually get around to it because Howard is a great writer :D

  6. Aman

I’m really not into the Alice in Wonderland story, but I do love the pretty covers for these series. Now Sekret is what I like, I’m not a fan of historical but I really like it’s premises. I might give it a try. Great picks :)

  7. Lauren

I’m SUPER excited for both of these! They’re very different, but I’m excited about them each for different reasons. Probably slightly more excited for Unhinged if I’m honest, but only because I’m invested in the series. Fab Wow picks! ;-)

    • Bec

Yay! They are different. We like variety :) And I really need to start the Splintered series…

  8. Cyn

I have Splintered on my TBR list and have heard great things, so I’m excited to get to it! The covers of the two books look great! Thanks for sharing & visiting Bookmunchies (:
