Graceling meets Beauty and the Beast in this sweeping fantasy about one girl’s journey to fulfill her destiny and the monster who gets in her way-by stealing her heart.

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she’s ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex’s secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.

I really but really hope that this new Jenny’s novel will be closer to Summer series that Burn for Burn, which wasn’t that great for me. I guess we wait and see. Cruel Beauty sounds really great, like retelling but with some really unique elements. Great picks!

I’ve never read anything by Jenny Han, but I hope it lives up to your expectations/wishes.

  2. Cee

I am beyond excited for both books. I adore Jenny Han’s books. I can’t wait to see all the boys confront Lara Jean.

I have a soft spot for the Beauty and the Beast story, but I’m a bit weary of the romance part in this book. I just hope Cruel Beauty creates a really strong female character.

    • Bec

It will be entertaining! Beauty and the Beast is one of my favourite fairy tales and I have the same hopes as you :)

  3. Lexi

I’ve only read one of Jenny Han’s books, but I’m hoping to read Burn for Burn soon, and I’ll probably check out To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before when it releases! I heard about Cruel Beauty during the Epic Reads ARC party, and it sounded pretty interesting :D

  4. Jennifer @ Some Like It Paranormal

I am so excited for both of these! I featured Cruel Beauty awhile ago and that cover is just to die for. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before sounds just as amazing because how embarrassing and interesting will it be for those boys to get those letters and find out how she truly felt. Curious how they will react. Thanks for stopping by!

I might buy Cruel Beauty just to drool over the cover.

It would be so embarrassing. It’ll be interesting to see how her relationship with them changes now as well.

  5. Jessie @ Jessie Marie Reads

I have only read one book by Jenny Han, though she was working with Siobhan Vivian – Burn for Burn and I really did not like that book. But I’m definitely curious about To All the Boys I Loved Before. Because I totally used to do that, too! Except, I burned/scrapped the letters shortly after writing them because I was terrified my friends would do exactly what happens in the book! Sounds like an interesting contemporary.

As to Cruel Beauty – The Beauty and the Beast is one of my all time favorites. So a retelling sound awesome. And the cover is great as well!

Great choices! I’m a new Bloglovin’ follower and thanks for visiting Jessie Marie Reads

Ooh…sounds like two winners! I’m a big fan of Jenny Han and didn’t know she had a new book coming out. Definitely will be getting it. Cruel Beauty sounds pretty awesome. Thanks for passing these on. I’ll be adding them to my TBR list for sure. Great picks!

I am DYING for Cruel Beauty Bec. DYING!!!! Beauty and the Beast is my very favorite fairytale, so I can never get enough of its retellings. And look at that cover? I need it my hands so I can drool over it. Fantastic choices this week!

  9. Jenna

The Jenny Han book sounds interesting but I hated the one book by her that I read so much that I don’t know if I’ll be able to talk myself into it. Cruel Beauty doesn’t sound like the kind of book I would like, but I love that cover.

  10. Janita @ Book, Interrupted

I love the sharpie writing on the cover of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, but the story behind Cruel Beauty has got me hooked. I love the play on Beauty and the Beast, but it’s not a very traditional retelling, which I’m super excited for!

Retellings are all unique in their own ways and I am 90% sure I have loved all the Beauty and the Beast retellings I have ever read so I am excited :D

  11. Cyn

I’m so excited for both books! The first one sounds soooo adorable. And well I could never resist a Beauty and the Beast retelling haha. Awesome picks! Thanks for sharing and & stopping by Bookmunchies (:

    • Bec

Yeah, they both hit my I-should-really-resist-but-can’t part of deciding what books to read.

  12. Merin @ Read and Reviewed

Both of these are on my to-read list! I actually have a galley of Cruel Beauty but haven’t read it yet. But the Jenny Han book sounds amazing! It’s actually going to be one of my future WoW picks. :)

Thanks for stopping by my WoW!

  13. Sandra

The Jenny Han book sounds really good. Every time I see that title I start singing Julio Iglasius and/or Willie Nelson. Just change the ‘boys’ to ‘girls’ and…. yeah.
    Thanks for stopping by!

  14. Rachel @ Paper Cuts

I’ve actually never heard of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, but it sounds really cute! I’m definitely going to go look it up. And I am so pumped for Cruel Beauty! I only needed to read the very first sentence of the synopsis to be sold. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite fairy tale and I ADORE Graceling, so nothing else was needed. (Though I did read the rest. Lol.)

  15. Aman

YES to both of them! The Jenny Han book is super adorable and I need to have it! As for Cruel Beauty, COME ON, Beauty and the Beast adaptation says it all. And I’m so excited to have an earc for it and can’t wait to dig in. Great picks! :)

  16. Niki Hawkes

Both of these books look amazing, but I’m really excited about the first one. The idea that your deepest confessions get to the people they were written for the very intriguing storyline. Thank you for stopping by my www.

  17. Aylee

Oh yes, I’m definitely waiting on both of these! The first because I have always heard good things about Jenny Hans writing (though have yet to try it out myself) and the second because I love Beauty and the Beast. I can’t wait to read some early reviews for these!

    • Bec

Judging from the comments on this post, Jenny Hans is good. It’ll be interesting to see what people think of them

    • Bec

Oh it would be nerve wracking. There’s no way I’d be able to cope with it. I’d just run away and hide.

  18. Asti (A Bookish Heart)

That cover for Cruel Beauty is just gorgeous. I don’t even care what it’s about. Give it to me now!

And though I’m usually more into fantasy, something about To All The Boys I’ve Ever Loved intrigues me. I cannot imagine having all my crushes find out how I felt about them through letters I sent to them at the time. And while I have some ideas about where the story could go with it, I have no idea! There’s so many possibilities. I’ll have to keep my eye open for reviews on that one when it’s published!

    • Bec

I will buy it (one day) just because the cover.

I’m the same with To All the Boys. It’d be really interesting to read, just to watch it develop.
