Reality, it turns out, is often not what you perceive it to be—sometimes, there really is someone out to get you. Made You Up tells the story of Alex, a high school senior unable to tell the difference between real life and delusion. This is a compelling and provoking literary debut that will appeal to fans of Wes Anderson, Silver Linings Playbook, and Liar.

Alex fights a daily battle to figure out the difference between reality and delusion. Armed with a take-no-prisoners attitude, her camera, a Magic 8-Ball, and her only ally (her little sister), Alex wages a war against her schizophrenia, determined to stay sane long enough to get into college. She’s pretty optimistic about her chances until classes begin, and she runs into Miles. Didn’t she imagine him? Before she knows it, Alex is making friends, going to parties, falling in love, and experiencing all the usual rites of passage for teenagers. But Alex is used to being crazy. She’s not prepared for normal.

Funny, provoking, and ultimately moving, this debut novel featuring the quintessential unreliable narrator will have readers turning the pages and trying to figure out what is real and what is made up.

Release Date: June 9th th, 2015

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she’s too busy trying to actually survive. Her town’s population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she’ll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie’s sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can’t survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

I don’t think schizophrenia is a topic that has been done much in YA yet (at least in contemporary. It’s lead to other things in paranormal books) so I’m very intrigued.

It has the potential for all the feels and messing with your head! I haven’t heard much about The Stars Never Rise (boo study) but I’m so excited because new Rachel Vincent!

Great picks yet again ladies^^ Alise you seem to be reading more contemporaries lately, I wish I could get into them more myself! Hopefully you’ll inspire me one of these days ;D And Bec, your pick is actually already on my tbr shelf! I haven’t read anything by Rachel Vincent yet but this one caught my eye. Happy reading ♥

      Thanks!

Alise reads so many contemporaries compared to my and my 90% fantasy TBR haha. Rachel Vincent’s books are great! I’ve only read Soul Screamers but that series got SO GOOD.

    • Bec

I’ve only read Rachel’s Soul Screamers books (and LOVE them) and really need to branch out into her adult stuff one day! I know what you mean, The Stars Never Rise has been on my TBR for SO LONG. It’s strange knowing it comes out really soon

Your picks are on point this week! I am really looking forward to reading both books as well!

For starters, I am going to be shallow and point out their gorgeous covers! LOOK AT THEM *shoves them in your face* (although since you already have them on your list, I have no reason to be shoving the covers in your face). Plus they both sounds so GOOD.

I am kind of scared of Made You Up since it is dealing with mental illness but, after having recently read a book that deals with mental illness and really enjoying it, I am not as scared as I once was.

Our picks are always on point ;)

*blinded by the prettiness* SO GORGEOUS.

Mental illness is always a bit of an iffy subject but I’m really interested to see how the schizophrenia influences the story.

    • Bec

Thanks! I’m so jealous you have a copy of The Stars Never Rise! And I’m pretty sure it is the first in the new series/duology :)

    • Bec

Pretty books are sure fire ways to get attention for your book haha. Glad we could introduce you to some new books :)

Alise: Eek! I hope you end up loving Made You Up as much as I did! It was such a different book and I adored both of the main characters. :)

Bec: I’m super stoked for The Stars Never Rise, too! I’ve read one Rachel Vincent book so far and I should really read more. Bonus points for the gorgeous cover and title! :)

Yes read more Rachel Vincent! She deserves more love.

I’m not a huge fan of unreliable narrators, but I’m really looking forward to reading some reviews for Made You Up, because I’m thinking it just might end up being incredibly amazing and I don’t want to miss out on it! It definitely sounds interesting, and I do love water colours, and she’s loaded with a magic 8 ball? Perfect.

I love that exorcist-hoodie comment! Aah. That is seriously wonderful. Xx

    • Bec

It does sound like it could be so, so great. I’d like to see how she uses that magic 8 ball haha.
