When I’m Not Reading: Gaming Edition

August 6, 2014 Discussion, When I'm Not Reading 34

Gaming is not one of my biggest past times. Compared to a lot of other people, I barely play video games at all. Really it’s something I pick up when there’s a new release I want or I’m really bored or something. Most of the time I put reading or watching stuff first. This is probably because I suck at games, am impatient, and am just really a terrible player. But it is something I do, and since a few days ago I just finished the latest computer game in one of my favourite series, I thought why not do a When I’m Not Reading post about it. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one and I have nothing better to talk about… So here let me tell you about the few games I obsess over and those I still haven’t completed.

First things first, when I get a game I will play it in one of two ways:

1. Play it non stop. I start it and do not leave my room until the story is competed. It consumes my life. I become obsessed. I use cheats because I am impatient and do not feel guilty because I JUST NEED TO FINISH AND KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

2. Start a game, play it all day for a few days. Never touch it again for a year.

That’s it. There is no other way in which I play games. It is terrible. These games are typically played on the PC, the good old PS2, and the Nintendo DS. Occasionally I will remember I have a Wii and muck around with that. But PC and DS are used by me most, and I return to the PS2 when I want to revisit old favourites.

1104NancyDrewGraphic-webThere’s only really two game series I can think of that fit the first method of play: Nancy Drew and Professor Layton. You may notice that these are both mystery/puzzle games! And the two series in which I am completely invested. I have played every single installment of these games, finished most (I have not completed the very first ND game, Secrets Can Kill, because the disc I got from the library  was corrupted *sobs*) and own nearly all of them (if anyone can point me to a reasonably priced copy of Professor Layton and the Curious Village or Pandora’s Box PLEASE TELL ME I have lost my copies).

I blame Mum for my addiction to both of these games. Nancy Dew was her first corruption. She saw The Secret of Shadow Ranch at the library and thought I might like it because I was (and still am) obsessed with ponies. I don’t think she had any idea that ten years later I would be pre-ordering every new installment. I love most of the Nancy Drew games, and some are better than others, but if I had to pick favourites some of the best ones are The Secret of Shadow Ranch, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, The Haunted Carousel, Curse of Blackmoor Manor, Secret of the Old Clock, Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, Legend of the Crystal Skull, The Phantom of Venice, Shadow at the Water’s Edge,  and Tomb of the Lost Queen.

I totally just named half of the games.-

6My love for Professor Layton started when Mum got a copy of the first game fo herself but never played it so I picked it up and LOVED it! Professor Layton is a series in which I love every installment. Even the movie! Each game makes me cry, and laugh and has the best plots. So many twists. I do end up using the cheats a laziness and impatience… But the puzzles are just half the fun when it comes to Professor Layton and I sacrifice so much sleep for these games. There’s only 6 games out in this + a movie + the Phoenix Wright crossover. I am so desperate for more. Also FUN FACT: the voice actor who voices Nancy in Nancy Drew also voices Luke Triton.

All the other games I play fit into the second category: play for a little while then forget about until motivation strikes me to play these again. A lot of these games are horse related. Due to a lack of eventing games (excluding Lucinda Green’s Equestrian Challenge, and Me and My Horse 2, Horsez 1 and 2, and the PC spin offs) most of my horse games are racing ones. Melbourne Cup Challenge, G1 Jockey 3, G1 Jockey 4, and Gallop Racer 2. Most of these are for the PS2. And are really the only horse games I have ever seen. WHY ISN’T THERE MORE PONY GAMES I WANT MORE PONY GAMES what do you mean almost 20 year olds shouldn’t be so obsessed with pony games

Sims is another series of games I dabble in. I own a few of the expansion packs but never get very invested for more than a day or two. Mostly I make Sims of my favourite fictional characters for the sole purpose of having my OTPs get together and have beautiful families. What else would you use it for? :P

And now, the games I am… afraid to admit I haven’t finished: Lego LOTR on Wii and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on 3DS. I’ve been wanting to play these for ages! But I think I got stuck at some stage and just… never bothered trying again (lack of time didn’t help matters). I think next big holidays I have free I might need to download a walkthrough and work my way through these because I am still in the early stages and it’s shameful.

What about you guys?

Are you a gamer? Do you have any recommendations for me? I’d love to read about the games you love! (and fangirl over them if we share some obsessions)

Seems like you’re really into mystery and puzzle games. I tend to like those too, but more on a higher graphic level format and more action involved.

I think my favorites are JRPGs (obviously the Final Fantasy stuff and there’s some really good ones like Bravely Default and Tales of the Abyss on 3DS. Then, action RPGs are wonderful like Dragon Age and Assassins Creed series.

Do any of those type of games “consume” you?

I do love those games! But I haven’t really played much else so I don’t know if they’d consume me or not. I really really want to try some of the games you listed though! Those stories look really fun

Oh Bec you should totally participate in Read Play Blog on the 16th of August! I think the topic is “What is your favourite gaming genre?” But you’ve pretty much covered it here haha…perhaps it would be adventure, or simulation. I loved The Sims so much but never really got into TS2. That reminds me, I need to continue my PLvPW…I kind of put it down and never finished it o.O

I think I saw your post about Read Play Blog no long after we scheduled this! Adventure / simulation does sound like the type of games I’d enjoy XD

HOW DID YOU NOT FINISH IT!!! (this putting down and forgetting is why I play games non stop)

    • Bec

Layton is great XD I’ve only really played Mario cart, never bought any of the others. And Animal Crossing I see everywhere but have never really actually played.

I really know nothing about games! The only times I’ll play anything these days is on Wii at friends’ houses. I’ve never owned any sort of console or had the urge to buy one, and I think I played my last PC game about 7 or 8 years ago. :P These two sound interesting though! I think I’d probably like Professor Layton, even if I didn’t know what I was doing.

haha Wii’s are great! Everyone can play games on them, and they’re fun.

That is a long time to go without games! haha there are cheats for when you don’t know what you’re doing XD

I love the Final Fantasy series. I actually have the FFX soundtrack and a Yuna figurine on my desk at work. I have never finished any of the FF games. I get sick of grinding to level to make it through a difficult part of the game.

Back in the day, I loved the Myst series. The Sims was awesome. I also like the Sierra world building games like Pharaoh and Cleopatra.

I’ve always wanted to play FF! The music comes up sometimes when I listen to 8tracks for study and it’s gorgeous.

haha there used to be so many world building games. I think I used to be addicted to Zoo or Safari Tycoon or something. You basically built your own wildlife reserve and had to deal with all the problems but I just wanted it so I could create ALL OF THE ZEBRAS

OMG another Nancy Drew fan! Yay, I’m so glad you enjoy that series as well! I love them and have played them all as well. So you’ve played the newest one then? The Shattered Medallion? I think my favorite is The Legend of the Crystal Skull and Ransom of the Seven Seas. I like them full of puzzles! I’m so glad I found someone to fangirl with about Nancy Drew. There’s so many good things….! :)

YAY! It’s always fun finding more of us! I have played the new one, it was okay but not the best. Crystal Skull is one of the few I own a physical copy of! Need to replay it soon. Ransom was meeh overall but quite fun.

      Nancy Drew is awesome XD

    • Bec

That is about my experience with PS3. They’re so expensive.

I’ve only played Crash Bandicoot a couple of times (we didn’t own many games when I was a kid) but it was fun!

    • Bec

Those are such creative names :P I’m curious what they involve.

Ah, the famous facebook games. Every now and then I’ll start one but I inevitably forget to play it one day. I also don’t progress particularly far because I hate sharing stuff for achievements, etc.

  6. Tanja

I haven’t play any game since Mario Kart on nitendo and that was (lemme do my math) almost 15 years. So yeah, long time ago. I don’t even have any desire to start any now as my biggest joy was to be player 1 from time to time (when my brother felt generous). Anyhow I have never heard of any of these but hey I’m glad you’re still enjoying them. Great post :)

I think I’m a gamer, although not such an obsessive one as my boyfriend. He plays games like I read books :) I like to pick up a game every now and then and when I’m hooked, I will play it for days and then it will take me some time to get started. I guess I like reading more, but I do enjoy a good video game. Most of them I play on my boyfriend’s PS3, but I do the occasional game on my laptop (and I love board games too!)
Mel@thedailyprophecy recently posted…Fairytale News 40. Do you comment on older posts?

    • Bec

Getting started is always the hardest part. Once you’re hooked though you cant leave until you finish! (A little bit like reading XD) I also find reading more enjoyable, but sometimes its so nice to do something completely different to reading!

Ah board games, those can be fun. Haven’t played them in a long time.

  8. Andreea

I don’t play video games at all. I think the last time I played one, I was 15 or so.

But I understand why so many people love them.

    Great post!

    • Bec

They are very popular! I kind of wish I had more time to play them because there’s some out there I’d probably love.

  9. Angie

Well… as you know from my blog I game A LOT! I play games on all platforms and just have a blast. I am very excited for the upcoming game called Destiny. It is going to be soooo epic. The one console I don’t own is the Nintendo DS. People seem to really love the games on there but I haven’t been a handle held gamer in years. Since the Sega Genesis actually. That’s a long time ago!! I can’t wait to see what games you play next.

BEC! Are you my twin or something? My sole reason for using Sims is to finally have my OTPs together! LOL. I love Sims, though. I am anticipating the new release! :D

Anyways I don’t have any gaming consoles, so I basically play at my friend’s house. We are so obssesed with Call of Duty: Zombies. We can play that forever. Ha.

    Great post!

I have fallen behind in all the sims releases and expansion packs and things. Still haven’t even looked into Sims 4…

I didn’t know there was a Zombie CoD! All I know about that game is that it’s a shooting one and in year 10 all the boys were playing it instead of working -__-

      Thanks :)
