Gaming is not one of my biggest past times. Compared to a lot of other people, I barely play video games at all. Really it’s something I pick up when there’s a new release I want or I’m really bored or something. Most of the time I put reading or watching stuff first. This is probably because I suck at games, am impatient, and am just really a terrible player. But it is something I do, and since a few days ago I just finished the latest computer game in one of my favourite series, I thought why not do a When I’m Not Reading post about it. It’s been a while since we’ve seen one and I have nothing better to talk about… So here let me tell you about the few games I obsess over and those I still haven’t completed.
First things first, when I get a game I will play it in one of two ways:
1. Play it non stop. I start it and do not leave my room until the story is competed. It consumes my life. I become obsessed. I use cheats because I am impatient and do not feel guilty because I JUST NEED TO FINISH AND KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.
2. Start a game, play it all day for a few days. Never touch it again for a year.
That’s it. There is no other way in which I play games. It is terrible. These games are typically played on the PC, the good old PS2, and the Nintendo DS. Occasionally I will remember I have a Wii and muck around with that. But PC and DS are used by me most, and I return to the PS2 when I want to revisit old favourites.
There’s only really two game series I can think of that fit the first method of play: Nancy Drew and Professor Layton. You may notice that these are both mystery/puzzle games! And the two series in which I am completely invested. I have played every single installment of these games, finished most (I have not completed the very first ND game, Secrets Can Kill, because the disc I got from the library was corrupted *sobs*) and own nearly all of them (if anyone can point me to a reasonably priced copy of Professor Layton and the Curious Village or Pandora’s Box PLEASE TELL ME I have lost my copies).
I blame Mum for my addiction to both of these games. Nancy Dew was her first corruption. She saw The Secret of Shadow Ranch at the library and thought I might like it because I was (and still am) obsessed with ponies. I don’t think she had any idea that ten years later I would be pre-ordering every new installment. I love most of the Nancy Drew games, and some are better than others, but if I had to pick favourites some of the best ones are The Secret of Shadow Ranch, Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake, The Haunted Carousel, Curse of Blackmoor Manor, Secret of the Old Clock, Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon, Legend of the Crystal Skull, The Phantom of Venice, Shadow at the Water’s Edge, and Tomb of the Lost Queen.
I totally just named half of the games.-
My love for Professor Layton started when Mum got a copy of the first game fo herself but never played it so I picked it up and LOVED it! Professor Layton is a series in which I love every installment. Even the movie! Each game makes me cry, and laugh and has the best plots. So many twists. I do end up using the cheats a laziness and impatience… But the puzzles are just half the fun when it comes to Professor Layton and I sacrifice so much sleep for these games. There’s only 6 games out in this + a movie + the Phoenix Wright crossover. I am so desperate for more. Also FUN FACT: the voice actor who voices Nancy in Nancy Drew also voices Luke Triton.
All the other games I play fit into the second category: play for a little while then forget about until motivation strikes me to play these again. A lot of these games are horse related. Due to a lack of eventing games (excluding Lucinda Green’s Equestrian Challenge, and Me and My Horse 2, Horsez 1 and 2, and the PC spin offs) most of my horse games are racing ones. Melbourne Cup Challenge, G1 Jockey 3, G1 Jockey 4, and Gallop Racer 2. Most of these are for the PS2. And are really the only horse games I have ever seen. WHY ISN’T THERE MORE PONY GAMES I WANT MORE PONY GAMES
what do you mean almost 20 year olds shouldn’t be so obsessed with pony games
Sims is another series of games I dabble in. I own a few of the expansion packs but never get very invested for more than a day or two. Mostly I make Sims of my favourite fictional characters for the sole purpose of having my OTPs get together and have beautiful families. What else would you use it for? :P
And now, the games I am… afraid to admit I haven’t finished: Lego LOTR on Wii and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on 3DS. I’ve been wanting to play these for ages! But I think I got stuck at some stage and just… never bothered trying again (lack of time didn’t help matters). I think next big holidays I have free I might need to download a walkthrough and work my way through these because I am still in the early stages and it’s shameful.
What about you guys?
Are you a gamer? Do you have any recommendations for me? I’d love to read about the games you love! (and fangirl over them if we share some obsessions)
